The Town of Wawarsing Highway Department maintains 165 miles of road. This includes, but is not limited to, pipe installation, ditching, resurfacing and snow removal. In addition to our own Town responsibilities, we assist our neighboring communities by providing manpower and equipment when requested. These communities reciprocate under a program called Shared Services of Ulster County. Our Seasonal Parks crew maintains our crown jewel, Lippman Park, as well as smaller parks and cemeteries in the town.
The Wawarsing Highway Department consists of 25 fulltime employees and 4 seasonal. Our fleet consists of 17 Heavy Duty trucks, 1 Semitractor, 2 specialty trucks, 10 small trucks, 20 pieces of equipment, 2 Heavy Duty trailers and 6 Light Duty trailers.
Winters are extremely taxing at the Highway Department. When inclement weather is expected, the Highway Superintendent and his Foremen take turns checking roads to provide prompt service to area residents. Our main concern is the safety of all traveling our roads. An additional service to Town residents is our mailbox policy. If one of our drivers unintentionally knocks down or hits mailboxes during plowing, we will repair and/or replace it in as timely manner as possible.
