MARRIAGE LICENSE
Marriage licenses are issued by Hanover County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in the clerk’s office at 7507 Library Drive, Hanover, Virginia. Try to arrive by 4:00 p.m.
In Virginia, you can be married by a qualified minister, judge or civil marriage celebrant who has been authorized by the court to perform weddings. To make finding an officiant easier, the clerk’s office maintains a list of court authorized civil marriage celebrants. VA Code Section 20-27 governs what civil marriage celebrants may charge for performing a wedding.
Once you receive your license, you may marry immediately anywhere in Virginia. If you choose to wait, it’s important to remember that the marriage must take place within 60 days of obtaining your marriage license.
Age Requirements
The minimum age to marry without the consent of a parent or guardian is 18 years of age. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must have the consent of a parent or guardian. If you are younger than 16 years of age, are or have been pregnant and wish to marry, different rules apply. Please contact the clerk’s office. VA Code Section 20-48, VA Code Section 20-49
